A mechanism, overseen by the UN, to replace the failed and opaque <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-kyoto-protocol\/mechanisms-under-the-kyoto-protocol\/the-clean-development-mechanism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Clean Development Mechanism<\/strong><\/a> and which, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieta.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> International Emissions Trading Association<\/strong><\/a>, would reduce the cost of implementing national climate plans by $250 billion per year and absorb 5 billion tonnes of C0\u2082. <em>\u2018For years, the voluntary carbon credit market has faced credibility problems, with scandals undermining its reliability. Now it can finally be different\u2019<\/em> said <strong>Jacopo Bencini<\/strong>, president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italiaclima.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Italian Climate Network<\/strong><\/a>.
