From forests to agriculture, Italy in the carbon credit market

The year 2025 marks a crucial moment for the carbon credit market in Italy. Despite the absence of an official public registry and defined national regulations, several Italian platforms are promoting alternative solutions to generate certifiable credits, such as forest regeneration and green building. Companies, for their part, are becoming increasingly interested in the credit market not only to obtain easier access to financing, but also because of their growing ethical commitment and compliance with ESG (Environmental, Sustainability, Governance) criteria.

As CREA’s Sustainability Forestry Projects Report 2024 shows, 80% of the total carbon credit market -from 2011 to 2022- was due to transitions made between 2021 and 2022. Of these, however, only 7% were generated in Italy due precisely to uncertain if not absent regulations. But despite this, companies on the one hand and manufacturers on the other are voluntarily moving in the name of sustainability through the implementation of Projects that must meet specific standards of integrity and transparency validated by third-party entities such as Rina.

At the European level, following the entry into force of Regulation 2024/3012 (Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Regulation), the European Commission will have to create by 2028 the single registry for tracking EU credit
